About The Chip Lab

Who we are, why we built it, and how we work with mills and suppliers

Why The Chip Lab exists

The Chip Lab was built out of necessity. Chip quality programs too often live in spreadsheets, binders, and one-off tools beside the classifier — hard to share, easy to lose, and invisible to the suppliers who could actually fix the problems. We built The Chip Lab to put mills and their chip suppliers on the same page: one platform where samples, deliveries, and quality standards live together, and everyone sees the same numbers at the same time.

The program is older than the platform. Our lineage starts with The Virtual Chip Doctor (TVCD), launched in 2004, followed by Chip MACS — the chip quality analysis and data-management software developed to supersede it — around 2007. The Chip Lab launched in mid-2017 as their successor: the same mission, rebuilt as a cloud platform that mills and their suppliers share. Mills have been measuring chips with this program, under one name or another, since 2004.

Our roots are in pulp & paper. But the same program fits any operation buying wood fiber by the ton.

Who we are

The Chip Lab is built and operated by StratusBase LLC, based in Hampden, ME. When something matters to your operation, you can reach us directly — by phone at +1 (207) 614-6042 or by email at support@chiplab.cloud.

How we work with you

  • Start with your operation, not a sales deck. A demo is a working session built around your specs, your suppliers, and your quality targets.
  • Set up together. We configure your mill, suppliers, and quality standards with you — and connect the classifiers and data sources you already run.
  • Direct support, by phone or email. Real people who know both the software and the industry it serves.
  • Your data stays yours. Export your data in standard formats, and see every change in a centralized audit log.
  • Always current. The platform updates continuously with nothing to install or maintain, and the documentation grows with it.

Trusted, and accountable

Leading pulp & paper producers have trusted their chip quality programs to The Chip Lab — along with thousands of the suppliers who ship to them. And we hold ourselves publicly accountable: our service status page is open to everyone, customer or not.
